BZA Hearing Result

On Thursday, February 11th at 7:30PM there was a public hearing with the Cambridge Board of Zoning Appeal.  At this hearing the BZA ruled that keeping backyard hens did not fall under the umbrella of acceptable accessory use of a property, as it did not fit the narrow definition of “customarily incidental” that the Board chose to use to interpret the Zoning Ordinance.

This is outrageous. It is so wrong. Regardless of what the Inspector or the Zoning Board may think about it being a good idea to keep chickens in Cambridge, the fact is that the zoning laws do not prohibit chickens any more than they prohibit having any other kind of pet or growing vegetables in your backyard.
